Home Stretch

As the end of the year is in sight, so is the extra pressure that comes with all things end-of-year related.  There is the pressure to meet goals, finish projects, and the list goes on and on.  Then, as fun as the holidays can be, that can add another layer of pressure on top of the end-of-year expectations.

So how do you remain productive and manage the extra pressure?  The answer is easier than you think.  One of the best ways to finish out the day, week, month, or year strong while keeping your sanity is to consider a stretching program.  While only the tip of the iceberg, here is how stretching can help you be more productive and feel better at the same time.

  • Increases Blood Flow - Stretching helps increase blood circulation to your muscles and brain.  This improved circulation can enhance your alertness and cognitive function, making it easier to concentrate on tasks and problem-solving.

  • Enhances Energy Levels – When you stretch you stimulate the release of endorphins, the body’s natural mood boosters.  This gives you more energy.  When you have more energy, you are more likely to stay productive and motivated.

  • Prevents Fatigue – Taking a break to stretch provides a pause in your work routine, allowing you to recharge and return to your tasks with a fresh mindset and less fatigue.

  • Reduces Stress – Stress is a significant productivity killer.  Stretching combined with deep breathing and mindfulness techniques, can help you manage stress and maintain your composure during demanding work periods.

  • Improves Collaboration – Encouraging stretch breaks for you and your colleagues can promote a sense of community and collaboration in the workplace.  It provides an opportunity to socialize in a unique way, share ideas, and build better working relationships.

To incorporate stretch breaks into your work routine, start small.  Pick 5-10 minutes in the part of the day where you generally start to slump and do some stretches or a short walk.  As you start to recognize the benefits to your energy and productivity, carve out 2-3 times in your workday to take a stretch break.

The Express Desk Stretch video library is a great resource.  Click here to access this week’s video which is designed to help you manage your end-of-year stress and rejuvenate and energize you. Enjoy it by yourself or with your colleagues.  By slowing down to take a stretch break, you speed up your productivity.  Give it a try.  The key is to be consistent and make stretching a regular habit.  This will improve your overall well-being and productivity.
